An American author named R. L. Stine wrote these stories. They are often called horror or thriller books. However, Stine says they are scary books that are also funny. The stories follow young teens in frightening situations. These kids often face things that are supernatural or paranormal. They might encounter ghosts, monsters, or other strange things. The books aim to be exciting without being too serious. Stine avoids including death, drugs, or violence in his stories. This helps the books stay fun for young readers.

Each book uses a similar way of telling a story. The main characters are often middle-class boys or girls. They are usually placed in lonely or remote locations. These places can be suburban neighborhoods or quiet campsites. Sometimes they are in boarding schools or foreign villages. Many characters have just moved to a new home. They often visit relatives or explore new areas. The stories are mostly told in the first person. This means the character tells their own story. Most books end with a surprising twist. The characters must use their wit and imagination to escape.

Stine found many ideas in his own life. He used his childhood fears to help him write. He also remembers what it feels like to be panicky. One idea came from his son, Matt. Matt had a Halloween mask that was hard to remove. This inspired the book called The Haunted Mask. Another character, Slappy the Dummy, came from the classic book Pinocchio. Stine often starts with a title first. Then, he lets that title lead him to a story. He once wrote some stories in only six days!

Scholastic Press published the books in the United States. In the United Kingdom, they were published by Scholastic Hippo. Stine originally planned to write only six books. Instead, he wrote sixty-two books for the original series. There are also many spin-off series. These include Goosebumps Series 2000 and Goosebumps HorrorLand. Some books are collections of short stories. Others are gamebooks where you choose your own ending. One series, Goosebumps Gold, was planned but never released.

Goosebumps has become a huge global success. As of October 2022, the series sold over 400 million copies. This makes it the second-best-selling book series in history. It is only behind the Harry Potter series. People read these books in 35 different languages. The stories have moved beyond just books. They became television shows in 1995 and 2023. There are also video games and comic books. Two feature films were made about the series. In those movies, Jack Black plays a funny version of R. L. Stine.
