Goosebumps is a massive series of children's horror novels written by American author R. L. Stine.

These books are designed for readers between the 3rd and 7th grades. While they fall under genres like horror, thriller, and mystery, Stine describes them as scary books that are also funny. The stories focus on middle-class tweens or young teens facing the supernatural, the paranormal, or the occult. Stine intentionally avoids themes of death, drugs, depravity, or violence. He believes this approach provides reading motivation without becoming too serious for young audiences. The series has become a global phenomenon, reaching a diverse audience of both children and older readers.

The storytelling mechanism in Goosebumps relies on specific plot structures and atmospheric settings. Most stories are told through a first-person narrative, meaning the protagonist recounts their own experiences. These characters are often placed in isolated or remote locations. This might include suburban neighborhoods, boarding schools, foreign villages, or campsites. Many plots begin when a character moves to a new area or visits relatives. A signature element of the Goosebumps experience is the twist ending, which provides a sudden surprise. Throughout these adventures, characters must use their own wit and imagination to triumph over evil or escape frightening situations.

There are many different types of books within the Goosebumps franchise. The original series consists of sixty-two books published between 1992 and 1997. Some spin-offs, like Tales to Give You Goosebumps and Goosebumps Triple Header, are short story anthologies. Other series, such as Give Yourself Goosebumps, are gamebooks that allow readers to choose their own endings. The Goosebumps Series 2000 was created to provide stories that were "much scarier" than the originals. Other branches include Goosebumps HorrorLand, Goosebumps Most Wanted, and Goosebumps SlappyWorld. Even though a series called Goosebumps Gold was planned, it was never actually released.

The history of the series began in July 1992 with the release of Welcome to Dead House.

Stine was originally persuaded to write for younger children by Joan Waricha, a co-founder of Parachute Press. He initially signed a deal for only six books with Scholastic Press. However, the series grew much larger than anyone expected. Stine drew inspiration from various sources, including the Tales from the Crypt comic books. He also used personal experiences, such as a Halloween mask his son Matt struggled to remove, to inspire The Haunted Mask. He even used his own childhood fears and memories of feeling panicky to fuel his writing.

The significance of Goosebumps is evident in its massive commercial success. As of October 2022, the series had sold over 400 million copies globally in 35 different languages. This achievement makes it the second-best-selling book series in history, trailing only Harry Potter. During its peak in the mid-1990s, the series was incredibly dominant. At one point, it sold over 4 million books per month. In 1996, the series accounted for nearly 15% of Scholastic's total annual revenue. This level of success demonstrates how a single writer can influence the financial fate of an entire publishing company.

Many iconic characters have emerged from the series to become memorable villains or heroes. Slappy the Dummy is the main villain of the Night of the Living Dummy saga and serves as the series' mascot. Other notable characters include Carly Beth Caldwell from The Haunted Mask and the Horrors from the HorrorLand series. The series has also expanded into various other media formats. There were television series produced in 1995 and 2023, as well as video games and comic books. Two feature films were also released, featuring Jack Black as an exaggerated, fictionalized version of R. L. Stine himself.

Beyond simple entertainment, Goosebumps connects to broader cultural and publishing trends. The series helped define the horror genre for a younger demographic. It also shows the power of brand awareness, as the series maintained an 82% brand awareness among children aged 7 to 12 as of 2008. The franchise's ability to evolve through spin-offs and different book formats shows how a single creative idea can build a lasting ecosystem. From its origins as a small six-book deal to its status as a multi-media empire, Goosebumps remains a landmark in children's literature.
