This place is very important because it holds vital water sources. These waters feed the Hasbani River and the Jordan River.

This land has a very long history of people living there. The earliest signs of humans date back to the Upper Paleolithic period. Some people believe a pebble called the Venus of Berekhat Ram was carved by Homo erectus a long time ago.

During the Bronze Age, small settlements grew on the slopes. Later, a kingdom called Geshur emerged in the area. Many different groups eventually ruled the plateau. These included the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and the Romans. The Ottoman Empire also ruled the land for many centuries.

Many different cultures left their mark on the Golan. In the 2nd century BCE, a group called the Itureans lived in over one hundred locations.

Later, Jewish people settled there following conquests by the Hasmonean king. The city of Gamla became a famous stronghold.

It even had one of the earliest known synagogues. After the Romans ruled, many churches and monastic retreats were built.

Some people even called these "noble mountains" because they were so holy.

Modern history has brought many changes to the region. During the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel occupied and began to administer the land. Two thirds of the area was depopulated during this time.

In 1981, Israel passed a law to apply its own rules to the territory. This move was called an annexation. Most other countries and the United Nations still consider the land to be occupied Syrian territory. In 2019, the United States became the first country to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan.

Conflict has often shaped how the land is used today. After the 1973 Yom Kippur War, a small part was returned to Syria.

This area saw many battles between the Syrian Army and different rebel groups. In late 2024, the situation changed when the Syrian government lost control. Israeli forces then entered the buffer zone and took control of some Syrian villages.
