The Golan Heights is a basaltic plateau located at the southwest corner of Syria.

A plateau is a large area of high, flat land. This region is bordered by several important landmarks. The Yarmouk River marks its southern border. To the west, it sits near the Hula Valley and the Sea of Galilee.

The Golan is vital because it contains water sources. These sources feed the Hasbani River and the Jordan River.

Human history in the Golan reaches back to the Upper Paleolithic period. Some scientists believe a pebble called the Venus of Berekhat Ram was carved by Homo erectus. This may have happened between 700,000 and 230,000 BCE.

During the Bronze Age, small settlements appeared on the slopes. These groups lived near the Sea of Galilee or in nearby gorges. In the Iron Age, the kingdom of Geshur emerged here. The Hebrew Bible mentions Geshur as a distinct entity during the reign of King David. Eventually, the region was absorbed by Aram-Damascus.

Many different empires controlled the plateau over many centuries. The Assyrians, Babylonians, and Persians all ruled the area at various times. During the Hellenistic period, Alexander the Great took control in 332 BCE. Later, the Itureans occupied more than one hundred locations in the region.

Around 83–81 BCE, the Hasmonean king Alexander Jannaeus captured the Golan. This conquest led to widespread Jewish settlement. One major city was Gamla, which served as a prominent stronghold.

Gamla contained one of the earliest known synagogues, built in the late 1st century BCE.

The Roman Empire also held significant power in the Golan. After the death of Herod the Great, the territory moved between Roman control and local rulers. The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus described the area as Gaulanitis. He divided it into "Upper" and "Lower" Gaulanitis. This distinction likely reflected Roman administrative changes after the Great Jewish Revolt. Following the Roman era, the region saw many different religious influences. Dozens of churches and monastic retreats were built near Mount Hermon.

Arab geographers later called the region the "noble mountains" due to its many holy sites.

Modern political changes began during the 20th century. After the Ottoman Empire collapsed, the area became part of the French Mandate in Syria. When the mandate ended in 1946, it became part of the Syrian Arab Republic. The situation changed during the 1967 Six-Day War. Israel occupied the territory and began to administer it. Two thirds of the area was depopulated during this conflict.

In 1981, the Knesset passed the Golan Heights Law. This applied Israeli law to the territory, an act described as annexation. The United Nations Security Council condemned this move in Resolution 497.

Control of the Golan has shifted due to several wars and agreements. After the 1973 Yom Kippur War, a disengagement agreement was made. This restored civil administration of one third of the Golan to Syria. This area included the capital, Quneitra.

For many years, the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) monitored a buffer zone.

This zone sat along the Purple Line to maintain a ceasefire. Between 2012 and 2018, the eastern Golan saw repeated battles. These battles involved the Syrian Army and various opposition factions.

Recent events have caused further changes to the region's borders. In late 2024, the Assad regime in Syria collapsed. Following this, Israeli forces entered the United Nations-monitored buffer zone. They took control of the zone as a "temporary defensive position." Israeli forces also entered two Syrian villages, Jamlah and Maaraba. Today, the Golan remains a significant area in international politics. While the United States recognized Israeli sovereignty in 2019, most UN member states still view the land as occupied Syrian territory.
