A goatee is a style of facial hair. It is hair grown on the chin.

The name comes from a goat. A goat has a tuft of hair on its chin. For a long time, people used the word for only that style. By the 1990s, the word changed. Now, it can mean any hair on the chin without hair on the cheeks. Some people call this a Van Dyke style.

This look is very old. People in ancient Greece and Rome wore it. Art once showed a god named Pan with a goatee. Later, artists used this look for Satan. This happened in art from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

The style became popular again in the 1940s. It was a key look for the beatniks in the United States. People in counter-culture groups liked it until the 1960s. Then, it was not as popular for a while. In the 1990s, it became a big fashion. Men of all jobs and classes wore it. Some men even grew a mustache with it.
