It started in 1560. The Portuguese people ran it. They wanted everyone to follow the Catholic faith. This group was part of the Portuguese Empire. They also wanted to trade spices.

The Inquisition looked for people with different beliefs. They targeted New Christians. These were people who had changed their religion. They also looked for people practicing Hindu or Muslim ways. The group used many harsh ways to control people. They used prison and even death. They also burned books in many languages. They did this to stop other ideas. These languages included Sanskrit and Konkani.

Many people fled Goa to stay safe. This helped them avoid the group. About 16,000 people faced trial. Some records show 57 people were executed. The Inquisition ended in 1812.
