Go Nagai is a famous Japanese manga artist and author.

He creates stories about science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Nagai is known for changing how people tell stories in manga. He helped start the super robot genre with his work Mazinger Z. In this series, a person pilots a giant robot from a cockpit. He also helped start the magical girl genre with Cutie Honey. His work helped create the post-apocalyptic genre through Violence Jack. These different styles show how much he has influenced modern art.

Nagai's journey as an artist began with a very personal moment. While attending a prep school, he became quite ill with a colon issue. He felt he might not live long and wanted to leave something behind. He decided to return to the manga he loved as a child. Even though his mother did not support his dream, he kept trying. He faced many rejections from publishers at first. Eventually, he joined the studio of the famous artist Shotaro Ishinomori in 1965. This was the start of his long professional career.

His first professional manga was a short comedy called Meakashi Polikichi. It was published in November 1967 in the magazine Bokura. Soon after, he found great success with the series Harenchi Gakuen. This work was so popular that it helped Shōnen Jump sell over one million copies. However, the series also brought much controversy to his life. Many groups, like the PTA, protested against his stories. They felt the content was too wild for children. Nagai even faced being called an "enemy of society" by some.

To handle the protests, Nagai changed his way of writing. He moved from silly jokes to more serious and dark themes. This led to the creation of the famous horror series Devilman. He also started Dynamic Productions in April 1969 with his brothers. This company helped him manage his many artistic rights and contracts. It was one of the first companies to use formal signed contracts. His friend Ken Ishikawa also joined the company to work with him. These steps helped Nagai stay in control of his creative work.

Today, we can see Nagai's influence in many modern stories. His ideas about giant robots and magical girls are still used. He even became a professor of character design in 2005. Since 2009, he has helped choose winners for the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. His life shows how one person can change an entire industry. He turned his childhood passion into a way to change the world. Many readers still enjoy the many genres he helped build.
