Global catastrophic risk

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A global catastrophic risk is a very serious event. It could cause major damage to people all over the world. This might hurt our modern way of life. Some risks are even more extreme. These are called existential risks. An existential risk could end the human race entirely. It could stop our future from ever happening.

These events would be permanent and could not be fixed.

There are two main ways these risks happen. Some come from nature and are called non-anthropogenic hazards. A large asteroid or comet could hit the Earth. A supervolcano might erupt or a pandemic could spread. Even the Sun could change into a red giant star one day.

Other risks are caused by humans. These are called anthropogenic risks. They can come from new technology or ways we rule the world.

Human-made risks include many different things. New tools like artificial intelligence could be a problem. Biotechnology and nanotechnology are also things experts watch closely. Problems with how we lead the world can cause big wars. This includes things like nuclear war or using biological weapons.

Changes to our climate are another big concern. Even the way we grow food can be a risk.

Scientists face hard jobs when they study these things. They cannot run experiments to see a disaster happen. It would not be right or possible to do that. It is also very hard to predict the far future. Humans have never faced an existential risk before. This means we have no history to learn from.

We can only look at smaller events from the past.

To stay safe, experts use a three-layer plan. The first layer is prevention. This means stopping the danger before it even starts. The second layer is response. This means stopping a small problem from becoming a global one. The third layer is resilience. This means helping humans stay strong even during a hard time.

By using these layers, we can better protect our future.
