Giuseppe Ungaretti was a famous Italian writer and poet. He was a leader in a style called Hermeticism, or "Ermetismo." This style changed how people wrote poetry in the 20th century. He used words to search for a new harmony with the universe. He wanted his writing to help save humanity from horror. His work was very important to Italian literature.

Ungaretti wrote in a very special way. In his book "The Buried Port," he removed most punctuation marks. He also got rid of strict grammar and structure. This made the individual words feel very powerful. He treated a single word as if it were a whole verse. This style was inspired by many different artists and poets. It allowed him to show deep feelings through simple writing.

His life began in Alexandria, Egypt. His family came from the city of Lucca in Italy. His father worked on the Suez Canal. Sadly, his father died in an accident in 1890. His mother ran a bakery near the Sahara Desert. She raised him with Catholic values. He went to a Swiss School and learned in French.

Ungaretti lived many different lives. In 1912, he moved to Paris to study. He met many famous people there, like Guillaume Apollinaire. During World War I, he served as a soldier in the trenches. The war was a very hard and painful time for him. He wrote his famous poem "The Joy" while fighting. In 1936, he moved to Brazil to teach at a university. He later returned to Italy to teach in Rome.

His writing connects to many other art forms. He was influenced by Symbolism and Futurism. He even spent time with the Dadaists in Paris. These were groups of artists who liked to try new things. His work helped bridge the gap between old and new styles. Even after he stopped using Hermeticism, his early ideas helped many other poets. In 1970, he won the Neustadt International Prize for Literature.
