Carducci's life was full of movement and change. He was born in 1835 in Valdicastello, a small town in Tuscany. His father, Michele, was a doctor who wanted to see Italy become one single country. Because of his father's politics, the family had to move many times. They lived in places like Florence and Lajatico. As a boy, Carducci loved reading about the history of Rome. He also loved the ancient stories of Homer. He even wrote his very first poems when he was only eleven years old in 1846.

As he grew up, Carducci became a master of many types of writing. He won a scholarship to study at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. In 1855, he published a book of poems for schools called L'arpa del popolo. Later, he became a teacher of Greek and Italian eloquence. He taught at the University of Bologna and was a popular lecturer. He even founded a literary group called Amici Pedanti with his friends. This group believed that Italy should look back to the ancient, classical spirit of the old world.

Carducci wrote many famous books that people still study today. One of his most important works is called Barbarian Odes, which he started in 1873. He used old styles of writing from ancient Greece and Rome in these poems. He called them "barbaric" because they sounded different from the classical styles. He also wrote a collection called Juvenilia in 1871. His poems often talked about the beauty of style and the importance of liberty.

Even when life was hard, Carducci never stopped working. In 1899, a stroke made it very difficult for him to speak or use his hand. However, he still published a book of poetry called Rime e ritmi that same year. He lived to be 71 years old and died in Bologna in 1907. A very large crowd attended his funeral in the city. Today, people remember him as a great writer who helped shape Italy.
