Gisèle Halimi was a brave lawyer and a leader for women's rights. She was born in Tunisia on July 27, 1927. Her family was Jewish and Berber. When she was young, she showed she was a fighter. At age 12, she went on a hunger strike. She did this to protest unfair rules for girls in her home. At age 15, she refused to marry a man she did not want to marry. These early choices showed her strong spirit.

As an adult, Halimi studied law in Paris. She became a lawyer to help people fight for justice. In the 1950s, she defended people fighting for freedom in Algeria. One famous case was for a woman named Djamila Boupacha. Djamila had been hurt by soldiers during the Algerian War. Halimi worked with the writer Simone de Beauvoir to tell the world about this. They wanted everyone to know how the army was acting.

Halimi also fought very hard for women's rights in France. In 1971, she signed a famous paper called the Manifesto of the 343. This paper was written by women who wanted better laws. At that time, it was against the law for women to have abortions. Halimi was the only lawyer to sign the paper. She helped start a group called Choose Women's Cause. This group worked to make things fairer for all women.

Her work in court helped change French laws. In 1972, she helped women during the Bobigny trial. This helped lead to the Veil Act in 1975. This new law made it legal for women to choose to end a pregnancy. In 1978, she also defended two women named Anne Tonglet and Araceli Castellano. Her work on their case helped change how the law looks at rape. It helped make sure rape was treated as a serious crime.

Halimi was also a politician and a world leader. In 1981, she was elected to the French National Assembly. This is a place where people make important laws. She also worked for UNESCO, which is a large group for world culture. She helped work for gender equality in many places. Halimi lived a very long and busy life. She died on July 28, 2020, at the age of 93.
