Historians chose this name after a book by Mark Twain. To gild something means to cover it in a thin layer of gold. This name shows that the era looked bright and wealthy on the outside. However, many serious social problems were hidden underneath that gold layer.

Railroads also helped create new ways to manage large groups of workers. They helped create a national marketplace for farming, ranching, and mining. Steel production in America even grew to be larger than Britain, Germany, and France combined.

Inventors created many things that we still use today. Between 1860 and 1890, people were granted 500,000 new patents.
