geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Gihon Spring is a very important water source. It sits in the Kidron Valley. This area is near the ancient City of David. The spring is part of the original site of Jerusalem. It was a main source of water for many people. This water helped humans settle in this area long ago.

This spring is an intermittent spring. This means the water does not flow all the time. It flows more often in the winter months. In the summer, it flows much less. People built the Pool of Siloam to help. This pool stored large amounts of water for the town. It kept water ready when the spring was not flowing.

Many people built systems to move the water. In the Middle Bronze Age, they made the Siloam Channel. This was a straight path cut into the ground. Later, people used the Warren's Shaft system of tunnels. They also carved the winding Siloam Tunnel into the rock. This tunnel was an aqueduct for the water. An inscription was even found carved into its wall.

The spring has many different names. Some call it the Fountain of the Virgin. This comes from a legend about Mary. The name Gihon may mean "gushing forth" in Hebrew. It is a very large spring for this area. It produces 600,000 cubic meters of water every year. This is much more than the Lifta spring nearby.

Archaeologists have found many things at the site. They found two large towers that protected the spring. These towers were built to keep the water safe. Scientists study the stones to find the right dates. Some think the towers are from the Middle Bronze Age. Others believe they were built or fixed later. The history of this spring is still being learned today.
