Later, he traveled to the mainland of Japan. In 1922, he went to the Kodokan with Makoto Gima. They were invited by a Judo master named Jigoro Kano. They performed a karate demonstration for everyone to see. This big show helped make karate popular in Japan.

He created a famous style called Shotokan karate. This name comes from his own pen name, Shoto. Shoto means "waving pines" in Japanese. The word "kan" means a training hall or house. So, Shotokan means the "house of Shoto." His students chose this name for his training hall. In 1936, he built his first Shotokan dojo in Tokyo. He also changed how the word karate was written. His work still helps people all over the world today. In 1949, his students started the Japan Karate Association. Funakoshi served as the honorary head of this group. He taught many different moves called katas. Some of these include Heian, Bassai Dai, and Kanku Dai. Even though he said there were no contests, his students started competitions. The first All Japan Karate Championships happened in 1957. This was the same year that Funakoshi died from colon cancer. Today, big contests are named the Funakoshi Gichin Cup to honor him.
