In our Solar System, there are four giant planets. They are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Scientists often call them jovian planets. This name comes from Jove, which is another name for Jupiter.

Some people call them gas giants. This name refers to Jupiter and Saturn. They are mostly made of hydrogen and helium.

Other scientists call Uranus and Neptune ice giants. These two worlds have different parts inside. They are mostly made of water, ammonia, and methane.

Most giant planets do not have a solid surface. Instead, they have thick layers of gas and liquid. Deep inside Jupiter, there is a layer called metallic hydrogen. This happens because the pressure is very high. This layer can carry electricity.

We also find giant planets around other stars. Some of these are called hot Jupiters. These planets stay very close to their stars. Because of this, they have very high temperatures.
