Giant planets are huge worlds that are much larger than Earth.

Some people call them jovian planets. This name comes from Jove, which is another name for the Roman god Jupiter. Most of these planets are not made of solid rock. Instead, they are made of materials that boil easily. These materials are called volatiles. In our Solar System, there are four of these giants. They are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

How these planets work depends on what they are made of. Jupiter and Saturn are often called gas giants. They are mostly made of hydrogen and helium. Deep inside Jupiter, there is a layer of metallic hydrogen. This happens because the pressure is so high that the hydrogen can carry electricity.

Uranus and Neptune are called ice giants. They are mostly made of water, ammonia, and methane. These planets do not have a hard surface to stand on. The gases just get thinner and thinner as you move away from the center.

Scientists have used different names for these worlds for a long time. The term gas giant was first used in 1952. A science fiction writer named James Blish came up with it. At first, people used it for all the giant planets. Now, many astronomers use it only for Jupiter and Saturn. They use the term ice giants for Uranus and Neptune. This helps show that Uranus and Neptune have more ices inside them.

There are many interesting facts about these giant worlds. Uranus and Neptune have very hazy atmospheres. This gives them a light aquamarine color. Uranus also has a very extreme tilt. This tilt causes its seasons to be very strong. Neptune is denser than Uranus. It also has more internal heat and a very active atmosphere.

Scientists also look for giant planets around other stars. Some of these are called hot Jupiters because they are very close to their stars.

Learning about giant planets helps us understand the whole universe. We can find many different kinds of worlds far away. Some are called mega-Earths because they are very massive and solid. Others are called super-puffs because they are very large but very light. There are even planets made of crystallized diamond and oxygen. By studying these giants, we learn how planets form. We see how gravity and pressure change how a world works.
