Jupiter has the largest atmosphere in our Solar System.

This huge layer of gas is mostly made of molecular hydrogen and helium. Other things like methane, ammonia, and water are also present in small amounts. The atmosphere does not have a solid bottom. Instead, the gas layers gradually turn into a liquid interior. This happens because the temperature and pressure are very high.

The atmosphere is organized into four distinct layers. These layers are the troposphere, stratosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere. The lowest layer is the troposphere, which contains a complex system of clouds. These clouds are made of ammonia ice, ammonium hydrosulfide, and water. Higher up, the stratosphere has temperatures that rise as you go up. The thermosphere is even hotter, reaching temperatures of about 1,000 Kelvin.

Scientists have learned much about these layers through space missions. The Galileo atmospheric probe entered Jupiter's atmosphere on December 7, 1995. This probe provided direct measurements of what the gas is made of. Other tools like the Cassini orbiter and the Infrared Space Observatory helped too. The Einstein Observatory even saw X-rays from Jupiter in 1983. These missions help us understand how the giant planet works.

Jupiter's clouds show many amazing patterns and colors. The visible clouds form colorful bands parallel to the equator. Light-colored bands are called zones, and they are colder than the dark belts. Zones are areas where gas moves upward. The dark belts are areas where gas moves downward. These bands are shaped by powerful winds called jets.

Giant storms and spinning spots also fill the atmosphere. These spinning structures are called vortices. The Great Red Spot is the largest known vortex in our Solar System. It is located in the southern hemisphere and is very old. This spot is so huge it could swallow two or three Earths.

Another red spot called Oval BA formed in the year 2000. It grew when three white ovals merged together.

Powerful lightning also strikes during big storms. This lightning is hundreds of times stronger than lightning on Earth.
