Gas giants are very large planets.

In our solar system, Jupiter and Saturn are the two gas giants. They are made mostly of hydrogen and helium. These planets do not have a solid surface like Earth. Instead, they have many layers. The outer layers have clouds made of water and ammonia.

Deep inside, the weight of the planet is very heavy. This pressure turns hydrogen into a liquid metal. We call this metallic hydrogen. This layer makes up most of the planet's mass. This metal can carry electricity. At the very center, there is a rocky core.

These planets have wild weather. Heat from inside the planet moves up through storms. On Jupiter, there is a famous storm called the Great Red Spot. It is a huge, swirling storm. On Saturn, it may even rain helium. This happens when helium turns into liquid drops. The drops fall deep into the planet. This process can make the planet glow with extra light.
