Long ago, Geronimo's life changed. In 1851, Mexican soldiers attacked his camp. They killed his mother, his wife, and his children. This made Geronimo very angry. He spent many years fighting to protect his people. He fought against both Mexican and U.S. soldiers.

The Apache people liked to move from place to place. The government tried to make them live on reservations. These were fixed areas where they had to stay. Geronimo did not like this way of life. He led his people on three big breakouts from the reservations. They fled into the mountains to be free.

In 1886, Geronimo surrendered for the last time. He became a prisoner of war. The U.S. government even showed him at fairs. He died in 1909 at Fort Sill. He was buried near other Apache prisoners.
