Geometry is a branch of mathematics that studies space. It looks at the size, shape, and distance between things.

It also studies where objects sit in relation to each other. A person who studies these ideas is called a geometer. For a very long time, most people studied Euclidean geometry. This type of math uses points, lines, and flat planes. It also looks at curves and angles.

Today, geometry helps us in many different ways. It is used in art, architecture, and almost all sciences.

Geometry works by using rules to understand shapes. In the past, people used it to solve practical problems. They needed to measure land or build large structures.

One way to study it is through axioms. An axiom is a simple rule that is accepted as true. Geometers use these rules to prove new ideas. They can use these proofs to find the area of a shape. They can also find the volume of a solid object. This step-by-step way of thinking is called mathematical rigor.

History shows that geometry has been around for a very long time. It began in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt during the 2nd millennium BC.

The Egyptian Rhind Papyrus and Moscow Papyrus are very old texts. These documents show how people calculated volumes long ago. In Greece, Thales of Miletus used geometry to find the height of pyramids. Later, Euclid wrote a famous book called Elements around 300 BC. This book organized math into a logical system. It was used by educated people for many centuries.

Many different cultures made great discoveries in geometry. Indian mathematicians wrote the Śulba Sūtras, which included rules for shapes.

In the year 628, Brahmagupta wrote about plane figures and stacking bricks. During the Middle Ages, mathematicians in Islam helped develop algebraic geometry. Omar Khayyam found geometric ways to solve equations. In the 17th century, René Descartes and Pierre de Fermat created analytic geometry. This new way used coordinates and equations to describe space. It helped lead to the invention of calculus.

Modern geometry is much larger than it used to be. In the 19th century, scientists discovered non-Euclidean geometries.

This means geometry can work on curved surfaces, not just flat ones. Carl Friedrich Gauss made a famous discovery about how surfaces curve. This led to the study of manifolds and Riemannian geometry. Today, we use these ideas to understand the universe. Even the way we think about "space" has changed. It is now seen as a mathematical structure where different types of geometry can exist.
