Geology of Venus

Venus is a rocky world very close to Earth.

It is similar to our home in size and weight. However, the surface is quite different. About 75% of the ground is made of bare volcanic rock. Most of the planet is relatively flat. It is divided into lowlands, plains, and highlands. The highlands cover about 10% of the surface. These high areas include places like Aphrodite Terra and Ishtar Terra.

Scientists use radar to see the ground. This is because thick clouds always hide the surface from view.

Volcanoes are the main way the surface changes. These volcanoes are shorter than those on Earth or Mars. Some shapes are unique to Venus. You might see pancake domes that look like flat disks.

There are also arachnoids that look like giant spider webs.

Other features include deformation belts made of folds and faults. These cracks in the ground may be caused by movement deep inside the planet. The surface is also very dry. There is only a tiny trace of water vapor in the air. Scientists think Venus might have had liquid water a long time ago.

It is hard to study Venus because of its extreme conditions. The atmosphere is very thick and heavy. It has a pressure of over 90 bar. The heat is also very high. These things can quickly break tools sent to the surface. Most of what we know comes from looking down from space. We use orbital radar to map the hills and valleys.

Some spacecraft have landed to take close-up pictures. The Soviet Union sent ten successful landers to the surface. These probes, called Venera, helped us see the rocks and dust. They found that some rocks are porous and easy to crush.

Venus has very few impact craters from space rocks. This happens for two main reasons. First, the thick atmosphere burns up small rocks before they hit. Second, large craters are rare because of volcanic activity.

Many scientists believe a huge event happened long ago. This event might have covered the whole planet in lava. This would have erased old craters and made the surface look young. This process might happen in cycles. The inside of the planet heats up until lava covers everything. Then the planet cools down and the cycle starts again.

Learning about Venus helps us understand how planets work. The planet's gravity and crust strength are similar to Earth's. This is why the highest mountains are a similar height to Earth's mountains. For example, Maxwell Montes is about 11 kilometers high.

This is similar to the height of the Himalayas. Even though Venus is very different, it shares many rules with Earth. Recent studies from October 2023 suggest Venus might have had plate tectonics once. This means it might have been a much more livable place in the ancient past.
