Venus is a rocky planet very close to Earth.

Most of its surface is made of volcanic rock. This makes the ground look very new. Many parts of the planet are flat plains. Other parts are high lands called highlands.

Volcanoes are the main way Venus changes. Some look like domes that look like pancakes.

Others look like webs. We call these arachnoids. There are also many faults. These are cracks in the ground.

Venus has very few impact craters. These are holes made by space rocks. The thick air burns up small rocks first. Large holes are also rare. This might be because lava covered them up. Scientists think a big event happened long ago. This event may have covered the planet in lava. This would erase old marks.

The planet is very dry. It has almost no water. It is hard to study the surface. The thick air and heat can break tools. We use radar to see through the clouds.
