Atmosphere of Venus

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Venus is wrapped in a very thick layer of gas.

This atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide, which makes up 96.5% of it. The rest is mostly nitrogen at 3.5%. This thick air creates a strong greenhouse effect. It traps heat from the sun very well. Because of this, the surface is incredibly hot. It stays at about 467 °C (872 °F). This is hotter than any other rocky planet in our solar system.

The air on Venus is also extremely heavy. The pressure at the surface is 92 times higher than on Earth. This feels like being deep under the ocean on our planet. At the surface, the carbon dioxide is so squeezed that it becomes a supercritical fluid. This means it acts like a mix between a gas and a liquid. It forms a kind of sea that covers the whole planet. This sea helps keep the temperature steady between day and night.

Scientists have studied this thick sky for a long time. Christiaan Huygens first thought Venus might have an atmosphere. Later, Mikhail Lomonosov provided real evidence in 1761. He saw this while watching Venus pass in front of the sun.

Today, we use special tools to see through the clouds. Since thick sulfuric acid clouds hide the ground, we used radar to map the surface. Recently, the Parker Solar Probe used infrared light to see the ground too.

The atmosphere has many different layers. The lowest part is the troposphere, which holds 99% of the atmosphere's mass. Above it is the mesosphere, and then the thermosphere. High in the sky, the winds move very fast. This is called super-rotation. These winds circle the entire planet in only four Earth days. This is much faster than the planet itself rotates. Near the poles, the clouds form S-shaped patterns called polar vortices.

Some parts of Venus are surprisingly like Earth. If you fly about 50 to 65 km above the surface, things change. The temperature and pressure there are almost the same as on Earth.

In this layer, the air is cool enough for liquid water. Some people think we could even build floating colonies there. Since our air is lighter than the Venusian air, ships could float like giant balloons. This makes the upper atmosphere the most Earth-like place in the solar system.
