technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Farmers grow many kinds of crops. These are plants like corn or soy. Sometimes, scientists change these plants. They use a way called genetic modification. This means they change the plant's DNA. DNA is a set of instructions for the plant. These instructions tell the plant how to grow.

Scientists can add new traits to a plant. A trait is a special feature. Some plants get traits to fight bugs. This helps the plant stay healthy. Other plants get traits to live in dry soil. This helps them grow with less water. Some crops are made to have more vitamins. This makes the food better for us.

These changes can help farmers grow more food. It can also help them use fewer sprays. Scientists must study these plants very carefully. They want to make sure the food is safe. People use these crops to make many things. They make food and oil. This helps feed many people around the world.
