Generation Alpha is a demographic cohort that follows Generation Z.

This group is the first to be born entirely within the 21st century and the third millennium. Most members of this generation are the children of Millennials. They are defined by a life lived alongside constant digital connectivity. They are the first generation to never know a world without smartphones or social media. This connection to technology shapes how they learn and interact with the world.

Digital technology acts as a primary tool for this group. Portable devices, social networks, and streaming services dominate their entertainment. Because of this, interest in traditional television is falling. Technology also changes the way children experience early learning in classrooms. This shift in education is a major difference from previous generations. However, this lifestyle also brings new health considerations. Studies suggest that screen time is linked to rising rates of obesity and allergies.

Several names have been used to describe this cohort. The term "Generation Alpha" comes from the first letter of the Greek alphabet. Mark McCrindle, a researcher from McCrindle Research, is credited with this name. He chose it to signal a new beginning rather than a return to old patterns. Other names have emerged based on specific trends. Some call them "Generation AI" because of artificial intelligence. Others use "iPad kids" to describe their use of tablets.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, new names were suggested. Some people used the term "Coronials" for those growing up during the pandemic. Psychologist Jean Twenge also uses the term "Polars." This refers to political polarization and the melting of polar ice caps. There is also no single agreement on the exact birth years for this group. McCrindle Research uses the range of 2010 to 2024. However, Jean Twenge defines the group as those born from 2013 to 2029. The Annie E. Casey Foundation uses 2013 to 2025. People born on the edge of Generation Z and Alpha are called "Zalphas."

Generation Alpha is a massive global population. By 2024, the group exceeded 2 billion members worldwide.

Most of these people live in Africa and Asia. This is because these regions see much more population growth than Europe or the Americas. In many developed nations, birth rates are falling. In 1950, the global average reproduction rate was 4.7. By 2017, that average had dropped to 2.4. This change is due to higher standards of living and more educational opportunities for adults.

Different countries are using various methods to handle these demographic changes. In Japan, the government introduced reforms to help families. They made preschool free for children aged three to five. They also reduced university fees to help students from low-income families. In Vietnam, the government recommended building more daycare facilities in urban zones. In China, there was a plan to invest more in physical education. This was intended to address concerns about young boys being too coddled. These examples show how governments react to changing population trends.

Economic and social factors also shape this generation. Wealth inequality can impact a child's success. In the United States, children from the highest income families are more likely to live with married parents. Education is another major factor in how populations grow. As people become more educated, they often have fewer children later in life. This is linked to urbanization, as more people move to cities. By 2019, 55% of the world lived in urban areas. These complex systems of economy, education, and technology all combine to define the experience of Generation Alpha.
