He earned many prestigious accolades for his talent. These include two Academy Awards and two British Academy Film Awards. He also won one Silver Bear and four Golden Globe Awards. His ability to play many different types of characters made him a major star.

Hackman's early life included significant responsibilities. He was born on January 30, 1930, in San Bernardino, California. His mother, Anna, was an actress, painter, and pianist. When he was 16, Hackman lied about his age to join the U.S. Marine Corps.

He served for four and a half years as a field radio operator. During Operation Beleaguer, he was stationed in China. His duties included destroying Japanese military equipment to prevent its capture by Communist revolutionaries. After 1949, he was reassigned to locations in Hawaii and Japan.

His path to acting was marked by rejection and hard work. In 1956, he joined the Pasadena Playhouse in California. He befriended another aspiring actor there named Dustin Hoffman. At the time, classmates voted them "the least likely to succeed." Hackman even received the lowest score the theater had ever given a student. He moved to New York City to prove these critics wrong. To survive, he worked at a Howard Johnson's restaurant. He used these difficult experiences as motivation to pursue his craft.

Hackman's professional career began with theater and small roles. He performed in several Off-Broadway plays starting in 1957. He also made his Broadway debut in the play Children From Their Games. A major success came in 1964 with the play Any Wednesday. This success helped him move into film work. His first credited film role was in the 1964 drama Lilith.

In 1967, he appeared in the crime drama Bonnie and Clyde. This role earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

He reached massive stardom in the early 1970s. In 1971, he won his first Academy Award for Best Actor. He played Detective Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle in the film The French Connection.

Following this win, he became one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood. Between 1971 and 1974, he starred in ten different films. He showed great range by acting in disaster films like The Poseidon Adventure. He also acted in the mystery thriller The Conversation, which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Hackman took on iconic roles. He played the criminal mastermind Lex Luthor in three Superman films. This role allowed him to show a mix of humor and seriousness. He also appeared in the 1986 sports film Hoosiers. In 1988, he starred in the crime drama Mississippi Burning. During the 1980s, he was often one of the busiest actors in the industry. He frequently alternated between leading roles and supporting roles to show his versatility.

Hackman's career concluded with a second major acting honor. In 1992, he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He played a villainous sheriff in the Western film Unforgiven.
