Beatty is known for seeking significant creative control over his projects. He often functions as a multi-hyphenate, meaning he performs several roles at once. He frequently acts, writes, produces, and directs his own films. He once explained that he enjoyed making suggestions regarding scripts and lighting. He even wanted to influence the wardrobe and production details. His sister, actress Shirley MacLaine, noted his desire for total control. This drive led him to manage nearly every aspect of his cinematic work.

His early life began in Richmond, Virginia, on March 30, 1937.

Campaign manager Gary Hart stated that Beatty invented the political concert. This demonstrated how Hollywood celebrities could mobilize for political causes on a massive scale.

His later work included large-scale historical epics.

He directed, produced, and starred in the 1981 film Reds. This project focused on the life of American Communist journalist John Reed. Beatty had spent a decade researching this subject before its release. The film was a success despite the tensions of the Cold War era. It earned 12 Academy Award nominations. Beatty continues to be recognized for his complex roles and directorial vision.

Throughout his life, Beatty has maintained a connection to his personal influences. He was moved by the film Love Affair, which he eventually remade in 1994.
