Sweat takes away water and electrolytes from the body. Electrolytes are tiny parts that help the body work well. The original drink was a mix of water, sugar, and salt. It also included potassium, phosphate, and lemon juice. Scientists wanted to replace the carbohydrates that athletes burn. This special mix helps the body get its energy back quickly.

This drink began at the University of Florida in 1965.

A team of researchers led by Robert Cade created it. They were working at the College of Medicine there. They made it for the school's football players, known as the Gators. The team tested the drink during their practices and games. In 1967, the team won the Orange Bowl. Their coach even said the drink made the difference in their win.

Many different companies have owned the brand over the years.

First, Stokely-Van Camp bought the rights to sell it in 1965. Then, the Quaker Oats Company bought it in 1983. Finally, PepsiCo bought the company in 2001 for $13 billion. The drink is now very successful in many places. It holds about 61.6% of the sports drink market in the United States. It competes with other brands like Powerade and Lucozade.

Today, you can find Gatorade in many different forms and flavors.
