Gas

physical science Maturity 11-13 Vital Level 3 Next article →

Gas is a type of matter. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Gas does not have its own shape. It will spread out to fill any space. This is different from solids or liquids.

Most gases do not have a fixed volume. Volume is the amount of space something takes up. This means a gas can expand or shrink. It will change to fit its container.

Gas can be found in many forms. It can be part of a mix. We call a mix of gases an atmosphere. The air around Earth is one example. Gases can also be very cold. Some gases can turn into liquids. This happens when they get very cold.

Scientists study how gases act. They look at how they move. They also look at how they fill a room. Gases are all around us every day. You are breathing them right now. They are a big part of our world.
