In Greek mythology, he was known as the most handsome of all mortals. The most well-known story tells of how he was taken from Earth to live with the gods. This event happened while he was tending sheep on Mount Ida. An eagle arrived to carry him away to Mount Olympus. Some stories say the eagle was under the command of the god Zeus. Other stories say the eagle was actually Zeus himself in disguise.

Once he arrived in the heavens, Ganymede took on a very special job. He became the official cup-bearer for the gods. This means he served them their drinks during their feasts. He took over this role from a goddess named Hebe. Zeus also gave Ganymede the gift of immortality. This meant he would stay young forever and never die. He was a figure of great distinction among the immortals.

Different writers throughout history told the story in different ways. The earliest stories from Homer in the 8th century BCE were quite simple. They did not focus on romantic feelings between the characters. By the 5th century BCE, many people believed Zeus had a deep passion for him. The philosopher Socrates had his own view on this matter. In one account, Socrates argued that Zeus loved Ganymede for his mind or soul. This was different from stories that focused on physical desire.

There are many specific details about Ganymede's family and life. He was the son of Tros of Dardania. To make up for taking his son, Zeus gave Tros a pair of beautiful horses. These horses were so fast they could run over water and air. Ganymede had several possible siblings, such as Ilus or Cleopatra. Some authors even gave him different names like Dardanus or Assaracus. Even his place of origin is sometimes debated by ancient writers.

Ganymede's story is still found in many places today. Some people believe he was placed in the sky as the Aquarius constellation. This is the water-carrier pattern of stars. The largest moon of the planet Jupiter is also named Ganymede. Artists have used his image for thousands of years. You can see him on ancient Greek vases and Roman stone carvings. He even appears as a character in plays by William Shakespeare.
