Some people look at ancient myths in a very special way. This approach is called euhemerism. It is a way to study old stories by looking for real history. Instead of seeing gods as magical beings, followers of this idea see them as real people. They believe that myths start from actual events or real people from the past.

Over a long time, these stories change. As people retell them, they add big details to make them more exciting. A great king might eventually be described as a powerful god. This process turns history into legend through many generations of storytelling.

The name comes from a Greek thinker named Euhemerus. He lived during the late 4th century BC. While his original books are lost, people knew his ideas well. He believed many Greek gods were once mortal humans. For example, he argued that Zeus was actually a mortal king. He claimed Zeus died on the island of Crete. He even said a tomb for Zeus could be found there. Some people even thought the tomb's writing was changed over time.

Many thinkers before Euhemerus had similar ideas. Writers like Herodotus and Xenophanes also tried to explain myths using history. Even the famous philosopher Socrates discussed these ideas. Socrates used a story about the wind to show how myths change. However, he also pointed out that some myths were hard to explain. He wondered how creatures like Centaurs could be real people. This shows that even ancient thinkers debated how much of myth was true.

Later on, different groups used euhemerism for their own reasons. Early Christian writers used it to talk about pagan gods. They argued that those gods were simply humans from the past. This helped them explain why people worshipped them. In the Middle Ages, writers like Snorri Sturluson used it for Norse myths. He wrote in the Prose Edda around the year 1220. He claimed the god Odin was a real leader from Asia Minor. He said Odin traveled north to rule lands like Denmark and Norway.

This way of thinking has stayed around for a very long time. In the 1600s and 1700s, historians still used these ideas. For instance, Antoine Banier wrote about Greek myths in 1711. He used euhemerism to explain how the old stories worked. Even today, people still look at the link between history and myth. It helps us understand how humans create stories to remember the past. It turns the world of legend into a world of real people.
