Gallicolumba

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Gallicolumba is a group of mid-sized doves. These birds live on the forest floor. Most of them live in rainforests. You can find many of them in the Philippines. Local people often call them punay. This is a general name for pigeons and doves. They are not like the ground doves in America. Instead, they are most like the thick-billed ground pigeon.

These birds have a very special look. Many species are called bleeding-hearts. They have a bright red patch on their chest. This red spot looks very startling. It can look like a red wound. It might even look like a dagger stab. This red patch is a key way to know them.

Finding out about these birds took time. A man named Johann Georg Heck introduced the name in 1849. He was a German author and lithographer. The name Gallicolumba is a mix of two other names. It uses Gallus for fowl and Columba for pigeons. These other names came from Mathurin Jacques Brisson and Carl Linnaeus.

There are seven different species in this group. The Luzon bleeding-heart lives in the north Philippines. The Mindoro bleeding-heart lives in the central Philippines. The Negros bleeding-heart is in the Western Visayas. The Sulu bleeding-heart lives on Tawitawi Island. We only have two specimens of that bird from 1891. It might even be extinct now.

These doves have a simple way of eating. They mostly eat fruits and seeds. This helps them live on the forest floor. They are part of a large family called Columbidae. Some scientists think they belong to a very old group. This group has many strange and small lineages. They are very different from many other birds.
