Gallicolumba

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some doves live on the forest floor. We call this group Gallicolumba. Most of these birds live in rainforests. They are often found in the Philippines.

Many of these birds are called bleeding-hearts. They have a bright red patch on their chest. This spot looks like a red wound. It can even look like a dagger stab.

These doves eat fruits and seeds. They are not like American ground doves. They are most like the thick-billed ground pigeon.

There are seven species in this group. One is the Luzon bleeding-heart. Another is the Mindoro bleeding-heart. The Sulawesi ground dove is also one. Some birds, like the Sulu bleeding-heart, are hard to find. We only have two specimens from 1891. They might be extinct. The name Gallicolumba was made in 1849. A man named Johann Georg Heck gave them this name. He used parts of two other names to make it.
