The G20 is a large group of nations that work together. It is made up of 19 different countries. It also includes two big groups called the European Union and the African Union.

This group helps solve big problems in the world economy. They talk about how to keep money systems stable. They also look at ways to help the planet and fight climate change. These leaders meet every year to share ideas and make plans. Their work helps guide how many parts of the world function together.

This group is very important because its members are so large. The 19 countries in the G20 make up about 85% of the world's total product. They also handle 75% of all international trade. When you include the two unions, the members represent 78.9% of all people on Earth. These nations also produce 83.9% of the world's CO2 emissions from fossil energy. Because they are so big, their choices affect almost everyone. This is why people pay close attention to what they decide.

The G20 began in 1999 because of many money crises. In the late 1990s, several countries faced huge debt problems. This included crises in Mexico, Asia, and Russia. Leaders like Paul Martin from Canada and Larry Summers from the United States helped start the group. They wanted a way for more major economies to have a voice. The first meeting was held in Berlin in December 1999. Hans Eichel from Germany hosted that very first meeting.

Every year, the group holds a big meeting called a summit. These summits change locations each year. For example, the 2021 summit was in Rome, Italy. The 2022 summit took place in Bali, Indonesia. In 2023, the meeting was held in New Delhi, India. The 2024 summit was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaders met virtually in 2020. These meetings allow heads of state to talk face-to-face. They also bring in finance ministers and other high-ranking officials.

The G20 has grown and changed over many years. The African Union joined as the 21st member in 2023. This was the first time a new member joined since 1999. Some people criticize the group for having limited membership. Others say it lacks the power to make everyone follow its rules. Some groups even protest the summits. However, the G20 remains a main place for global cooperation. It follows older ideas from after World War II to help nations work as one.
