Native speakers call it Bàng-uâ. This means "the everyday language." It is part of the Min group of Chinese languages. Fuzhou is a tonal language. This means the pitch of your voice changes the word's meaning. It has seven main tones. These tones can change when words join together. This is called sandhi. These rules make Fuzhou hard to learn.

In the 1800s, missionaries used a special way to write it. They used English letters. This was called Foochow Romanized. Today, Fuzhou is a protected cultural treasure. In Matsu, children learn it in school. People use it for bus announcements too. This helps keep the language alive for the future.
