Furry lobster

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The furry lobster is a small type of decapod crustacean. Decapod means these animals have ten legs.

You might also hear people call them coral lobsters. They are closely related to two other groups of sea animals. These relatives are the slipper lobsters and the spiny lobsters. These creatures belong to a larger group known as Achelata. Scientists study them to understand how different sea animals are related to one another.

Furry lobsters have specific physical traits that set them apart. Their bodies are covered in short hairs. This unique feature is how they earned their common name.

They also possess antennae, which are feelers used for sensing their environment. However, their antennae are not very large. This is a key difference from their relatives. Spiny lobsters and slipper lobsters have much more enlarged antennae. These physical details help researchers identify different species within the ocean.

For a long time, scientists classified these animals in a specific way. In 1881, a researcher named Spence Bate identified them as their own family. He called this family Synaxidae.

This meant they were considered completely separate from spiny lobsters. However, scientific understanding changed over time. In 1990, researchers moved the furry lobsters into a different family. They were placed into the family known as Palinuridae.

Modern science used new tools to confirm this change in grouping. Scientists used molecular phylogenetics to study the animals. This is the study of how DNA and genes show relationships between living things. These studies showed that the furry lobster genera do not form a single natural group. Instead, they were found to be nested among the spiny lobster genera. This means they are actually part of the spiny lobster family tree.

The Palinuridae family now includes twelve different genera. This includes the two furry lobster genera and ten spiny lobster genera.

There are two main genera of furry lobsters. Between these two groups, there are three distinct species. The first is the mole lobster, or Phyllamphion elegans. This species was named by Reinhardt in 1849. It has a wide distribution across the Indo-Pacific region.

The second genus includes the Caribbean furry lobster. Its scientific name is Phyllamphion gundlachi. This species was named by Von Martens in 1878.

The Caribbean furry lobster lives in specific parts of the world. You can find it in the Caribbean Sea. It is also found along the Atlantic coast of South America. The third species is the musical furry lobster. Its scientific name is Palibythus magnificus. This species was described by P. J. F. Davie in 1990.

The musical furry lobster comes from the South Pacific. It was originally described from the area near Samoa.

Studying these lobsters helps us understand the complexity of life. The history of their classification shows how science evolves. We moved from looking at physical hairs to looking at DNA. This shift changed how we view the Palinuridae family. It shows that even small animals can reveal big secrets about evolution. The way these genera are nested within others helps scientists map the history of the ocean.
