A funeral home is a professional business that manages the needs of the deceased and their families. These establishments are also called funeral parlors or mortuaries. They provide essential services such as burial, entombment, and cremation. Beyond these physical tasks, they act as guides for people experiencing loss. They help organize ceremonies and manage the many details that follow a death. This work ensures that the wishes of the deceased or their legal representatives are honored.

Funeral homes perform a wide variety of technical and administrative tasks. They manage necessary legal paperwork and obtain required permits. They also coordinate with cemeteries to schedule burials. Many homes provide obituaries to news media to share news of a death. Some funeral homes even offer prearrangement options. This allows individuals to plan their own services before they pass away. In recent years, many businesses have moved into the digital space. They now post obituaries online and create memorial websites using family materials.

There are several distinct types of services commonly used in North America. A traditional funeral service typically follows a three-step sequence. It begins with a viewing, which is sometimes called a visitation. This is followed by a funeral service held in a chapel or a place of worship. The process concludes with a graveside committal service. Other families may choose direct cremation. In this process, the funeral home receives the body and prepares it for the crematory. They also handle all the legal filings. A third option is direct or immediate burial. This is a prompt and simple burial that does not include a formal ceremony.

When a body must be moved between different mortuaries, specific protocols are followed. This is common when someone is to be buried in a different locality than where they died. The body is prepared for shipment by being placed in a coffin. This coffin is then strapped into a special unit called an airtray or a mac pac. This ensures the body remains secure during transport. This logistical work is a key part of how funeral homes manage long-distance arrangements.

Staff members often perform embalming to delay decomposition. This process can make a viewing more pleasant for the family. Embalming involves removing enough blood to make room for preservative chemicals and dyes. The embalmer also performs aspiration on the internal organs. To help the person look more natural, cosmetics may be applied to the face and hands. This is done only with the consent of the family. If an accident or illness has disfigured a person, embalmers use restorative techniques. These techniques are used to make the person presentable for an "open casket" service. If these methods are not used, the family may choose a "closed casket" service.

The history of this profession is very long. It dates back to the age of the Egyptians. The Egyptians were masters of the science of preservation. This ancient knowledge laid the groundwork for how humans have handled death for centuries. Today, the industry includes both small local businesses and large multi-national corporations. This scale has led to significant legal history within the field.

Some large corporations have faced high-profile litigation regarding their operations. The Loewen Group, Inc. was involved in a major case in Mississippi. The company later sued the United States in 1998, alleging violations under NAFTA. Another large company is Service Corporation International, or SCI. In 2009, a class-action lawsuit was filed against SCI and Eden Memorial Park. The lawsuit alleged that remains were being moved to create more space for new burials. This legal matter resulted in an $80 million settlement in 2014. These cases show how the funeral industry interacts with complex legal and corporate systems.
