Formed in 1986, the group became famous for a unique musical style. They are also known for a strong DIY, or "do-it-yourself," ethical stance. This means they prefer to control their own business and art. They often show contempt for the traditional music industry. This approach helped them maintain independence while gaining worldwide success. They released six studio albums and many live recordings during their active years.

The band's music is created through a collaborative process. The core members include Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto on guitar and vocals. Joe Lally plays the bass, and Brendan Canty plays the drums. In the early years, songs were often composed by MacKaye alone. However, the band later transitioned to jamming together to write material. Each member brings their own riffs and ideas to the group. They then piece these ideas together into different configurations. During recording sessions, they often experiment with different sounds. For example, they used many different drum kits and microphones to create unique textures.

Fugazi's music evolved through several distinct stages. Their early work included EPs like *Fugazi* and *Margin Walker*. These were eventually combined into the *13 Songs* collection. Later, they moved into a more collaborative jamming style. This led to the release of their first full-length album, *Repeater*. As they progressed, they explored an "art rock" aesthetic. This style featured more ambient sounds and greater depth. Their later albums, such as *End Hits* and *The Argument*, showed even more experimentation. They even used a second drummer, Jerry Busher, to replicate complex drum sounds during live shows.

The band's history began in the late summer of 1986. Ian MacKaye wanted to prioritize making music over the social aspects of being in a band. He recruited Joe Lally, and they soon added Brendan Canty. Guy Picciotto joined later after initially visiting a practice session. MacKaye chose the name "Fugazi" from a book of stories by Mark Baker. In this context, the word means "false or inauthentic." The band played their first show at the Wilson Center in September 1987. They quickly began touring, including an arduous trip to Europe in 1988.

Fugazi achieved significant success through independent means. Their album *Repeater*, released in April 1990, sold over 300,000 copies. This was a massive number for a label with minimal promotion. Their 1993 album, *In on the Kill Taker*, was their first to enter the Billboard charts. This success allowed them to play large auditoriums and arenas. Despite this growth, they stayed with their independent label, Dischord Records. Even when offered massive deals, they remained committed to their principles. Their impact is measured by both sales and their massive influence on punk and alternative music.

One of the most notable facts about Fugazi is their refusal of major label offers. In 1993, Atlantic Records president Ahmet Ertegun offered the band over $10 million. He even offered to create a special subsidiary label just for them. Fugazi declined the offer to stay independent. They also turned down a headlining slot at the Lollapalooza festival in 1993. These decisions highlight their commitment to their DIY ethics.

They chose artistic control over large sums of money.

Fugazi's legacy connects to the broader history of alternative rock. Their sound predated the mainstream explosion of the genre in the early 1990s. They helped define the post-hardcore movement through their specific musical and business choices. After a period of heavy touring, the band entered an "indefinite hiatus" in 2003. This allowed members to focus on families and other professional projects. While they have declined many offers to reunite for large festivals, they have not officially broken up. They continue to be studied as a model for independent artists worldwide.
