Black Flag was an influential American punk rock band. They formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California. The group is widely considered a pioneer of hardcore punk. They also helped lead the first wave of West Coast punk rock. The band's music was known for its speed and ferocity.

To understand their sound, one must look at their musical layers. They mixed the raw simplicity of the Ramones with atonal guitar soloing. This style was similar to Johnny Thunders of the New York Dolls. In later years, the band used frequent tempo shifts. They also incorporated elements of heavy metal melodies and rhythm. Some songs even included free jazz and contemporary classical influences. This made their music more complex than the standard three-chord punk format.

The band's lineup changed many times over the years. Greg Ginn was the guitarist, primary songwriter, and sole continuous member. He founded the band originally under the name Panic with singer Keith Morris. After Morris left in 1979, the band had several other vocalists. These included Ron Reyes and Dez Cadena. In 1981, Henry Rollins joined as the lead singer. Rollins was the band's longest-lasting vocalist.

Black Flag's identity was tied to a strong DIY, or do-it-yourself, ethic. This meant they operated independently of the mainstream music industry. Because they could not secure contracts with existing labels, Ginn created SST Records. This became an important independent record label. The band also organized their own performances. They played at house parties, schools, and picnics. They used hundreds of flyers to promote these shows.

The band's visual identity was also unique. Ginn's brother, Raymond Pettibon, suggested the name Black Flag. He also designed their iconic logo. The logo consists of four stylized black bars. Pettibon explained that while a white flag means surrender, a black flag represents anarchy. He also designed the band's early flyers and album covers. His severe, haunting comic strip style became a recognizable part of their aesthetic.

History shows that the band faced many challenges. Their shows were often broken up by the Los Angeles Police Department. This happened under the direction of Police Chief Daryl Gates. Despite these struggles, the band toured extensively. They traveled throughout the United States and Canada, and occasionally Europe. This constant touring helped them build a dedicated cult following. They proved that an independent band could reach many people through hard work.

One of their most significant achievements was the 1981 album, *Damaged*. This record is often called their most iconic and focused work. It captured a visceral and intensely physical presence. The album helped forge an independent touring network. This network became a cornerstone of the independent music scene for the next decade. The band's influence helped shape punk subculture in the United States and around the world.

Black Flag's journey did not end in the 1980s. After breaking up in 1986, they reunited in 2003. They reunited again in 2013. During the second reunion, they released their first studio album in nearly thirty years. That album was titled *What The...* (2013). They also announced a third reunion in January 2019.
