The group is widely recognized for its pop-punk musical style. This genre blends catchy pop melodies with fast-paced punk rock rhythms. Their lyrics often explore themes of relationships, adolescent frustration, and maturity. The band emerged from the suburban skate punk scene of Southern California. They gained notoriety through high-energy live performances and irreverent humor. Today, the band remains a major force in rock music.

Guitarist Tom DeLonge and bassist Mark Hoppus met through a mutual connection. They spent many hours co-writing songs in DeLonge's garage. They eventually added drummer Scott Raynor to the group. The trio practiced in Raynor's bedroom to develop their sound. They initially used names like Duck Tape and Figure 8. Eventually, DeLonge renamed the group "Blink." They later added the number 182 to the name to avoid legal issues with an Irish band.

In their early years, the band relied on independent labels and hard work. They signed a trial contract with Cargo Records, an independent imprint. Their debut album, Cheshire Cat, was released in February 1995. The band recorded this album in just three days. They toured extensively in a van they nicknamed the Millennium Falcon. During the Good Times tour, they even traveled to Australia. Members of the band Pennywise helped pay for their plane tickets. This period helped the band build a reputation in the local San Diego punk scene.

The band experienced a massive commercial breakthrough in the late 1990s. After signing with MCA Records, they released Enema of the State in 1999. This album was a global success, selling over fifteen million copies. It featured hit singles like "All the Small Things" and "What's My Age Again?"

These songs became staples on MTV, which cemented their stardom. They worked with producer Jerry Finn to create a more polished pop-punk sound. This success helped initiate a second mainstream rise for the pop-punk genre. The band's simple arrangements made them popular across many different generations.

Membership in Blink-182 has changed several times over the decades. Mark Hoppus is the only member to remain in the band throughout its entire history. Scott Raynor was the founding drummer but was dismissed in 1998. He was replaced by Travis Barker, who joined the group full-time. Barker famously learned a 20-song setlist in only 45 minutes before his first show. Tom DeLonge left the group twice, once for a decade. During his absence from 2015 to 2022, Matt Skiba joined the band. Skiba recorded two albums, California and Nine, with Hoppus and Barker.

The band has achieved significant commercial milestones during its career. They have sold 50 million albums worldwide. In the United States alone, they have sold 15.3 million albums. These numbers reflect their lasting impact on the music industry. Their ability to adapt their style has kept them relevant.

Blink-182's history is closely tied to the evolution of the Southern California music scene. The band grew alongside an active culture of surfing, skating, and snowboarding. Their melodic West Coast punk style contrasted with the darker sounds of East Coast punk. They moved from playing small venues like Elks Lodges to becoming international rock stars. Their journey from independent touring to major label success is a classic example of musical growth. By blending humor with serious themes of growing up, they connected with a wide audience. They remain a significant part of the history of modern rock music.
