Black Flag is a famous punk rock band from California.

They began in 1976. At first, the group was named Panic. Greg Ginn started the band. He plays the guitar and writes most songs. He is the only member who stayed for the whole history of the group.

Early on, the band had a hard time finding players. They often practiced without a bass player. This helped Greg Ginn make a unique guitar sound. The band's name and logo came from Greg's brother, Raymond Pettibon.

The logo shows four black bars. A white flag means to give up. A black flag represents anarchy.

Black Flag was very hard working. They used a "do-it-yourself" or DIY way to make music. This means they did things on their own. They started their own record label called SST Records. They played shows at house parties and schools. They even made their own flyers to tell people about shows.

In 1981, Henry Rollins joined as the singer.

He was an intense performer. The band's music was very fast and loud. They also played long and complex songs. Their music helped start the hardcore punk style.
