The band had four main members. Ian MacKaye sang the songs. Jeff Nelson played the drums. Lyle Preslar played guitar. Brian Baker played bass. They played music very fast. Many of their songs lasted only one minute. This style is called hardcore punk.

Minor Threat believed in a DIY way of life. DIY means "do it yourself." They did not wait for big companies to help them. Instead, they started their own record label. They called it Dischord Records. This helped many other bands share their music.

One song was called "Straight Edge." This song helped start a new movement. It encouraged people to live without drugs or alcohol. The band also wanted to build a community. They played their first show in a basement for fifty people.

The band split up in 1983. They had different ideas about their music. Even so, they changed how people made and shared music. Many bands still follow their lead today.
