They started making music in 1986. The group is well known for its unique style. They also follow a special way of doing business. This is often called a DIY or "do-it-yourself" stance. They prefer to stay independent from big music companies. This choice helps them keep control over their art. They want the music to come first. This belief makes their work very special to fans.

Making their music involves a lot of teamwork and practice. The band has four members. Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto play guitar and sing. Joe Lally plays the bass. Brendan Canty plays the drums. In the beginning, Ian MacKaye wanted to focus on music. He did not want to be in a band just for the sake of it. He eventually asked Joe Lally to play with him. Later, they added Brendan Canty and Guy Picciotto. They often work together in a studio to find new sounds. They even use different drum kits to get a unique feel.

The band has a long and interesting history. They began practicing in the late summer of 1986. Ian MacKaye chose the name "Fugazi" from a book of stories. The name can mean something that is false or inauthentic. In 1987, they played their very first show at the Wilson Center. They went on their first big tour in January 1988. During this time, they traveled all the way to Europe. They worked with a producer named Don Zientara for many years. This helped them create many different kinds of songs.

Fugazi has released many important records over the years. Their album *Repeater* came out in April 1990. It was a big success even without much help from big companies. They sold over 300,000 copies of that album. Another famous album is *In on the Kill Taker*, released in 1993. This was their first record to reach the Billboard charts. They also made an album called *The Argument* in 2001. They even released a collection of early songs called *First Demo* in 2014. These records show how much their sound changed over time.

Many people look at Fugazi to learn about being independent. They are a great example of how to stay true to yourself. For instance, they turned down a $10 million offer from a major label. They also said no to playing at the big Lollapalooza festival. In 2003, the band went on an "indefinite hiatus." This means they took a long, unplanned break. They wanted to spend time with their families and other projects. Even though they are not touring, they are not officially broken up. They might play together again if the time feels natural.
