He later became the president of the company in 1961. He held this important job for ten years.

During World War II, Frits showed great courage. His father and other family members had to flee to the United States. Frits stayed behind in the Netherlands during the Nazi occupation. He worked hard to keep the company running during the war. He also used his position to save many lives. Frits convinced the Nazis that 382 Jewish people were needed to make products. Because of this, those people were kept safe.

In 1996, he was named Righteous Among the Nations for this.

Frits was very popular with the people in his home city. They called him "Meneer Frits," which means Mister Frits. He was a kind man who treated everyone the same. He did not care about social classes or fancy titles. He often chatted with the workers in the factories. Even at football games, he sat in the regular crowd. He sat in section D, row 22, seat 43 at PSV matches.
