Fringe science

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some ideas sit on the edge of science. We call this fringe science. These ideas are often highly speculative. That means they are big guesses. Some fringe ideas are wrong. Other ideas might become real science later.

One old idea was called focal infection theory. It said tooth problems caused body sickness. This idea was once a medical fact. But it was based on bad studies. It led to many people having teeth pulled for no reason. Later, scientists found no proof. So, they dismissed the idea.

Sometimes, science changes when we find new proof. For a long time, people rejected the idea of continental drift. This is the idea that lands move. Later, it became part of plate tectonics. This is the study of how Earth's parts move. Other ideas, like the Big Bang, also started as fringe ideas.

Fringe science can be helpful. It keeps science from getting stuck. Scientists must check every new claim. They use the scientific method to see if an idea is true. This helps us find the truth about our world.
