Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel was a brilliant German scientist.

He was a mathematician, physicist, and astronomer. He also worked in geodesy, which is the science of measuring the Earth. Bessel was very important because he helped us understand the size of the universe. He was the first person to find a reliable distance to another star. This discovery changed how we see the night sky.

Bessel used a method called stellar parallax to measure distances. This way of working looks at how a star seems to shift position. He used a special tool called a heliometer to do this. In 1838, he found the distance to the star 61 Cygni. He calculated it was about 10.3 light-years away. This was a huge step for science. It provided proof of how the Earth moves through space.

Bessel's life began in Minden, Westphalia. He did not attend a university at first. He left school at age 14 to work for a business in Bremen. This business used cargo ships for trade. This job made him interested in math for navigation. He later worked at a private observatory in Lilienthal. In 1810, King Frederick William III of Prussia appointed him director of the Königsberg Observatory.

Bessel was a very busy researcher. He determined the positions of over 50,000 stars. He also noticed that stars like Sirius moved in strange ways. He believed a "dark companion" was pulling them with gravity. This was the first correct claim of an unseen star. Later, scientists found a white dwarf star there. He also studied math rules called Bessel functions. These functions are still used in physics today.

Many things in space and science are named after him. There is a large crater on the Moon named Bessel. An asteroid named 1552 Bessel also carries his name. You can even find two fjords in Greenland named after him. His math work helped people find the planet Neptune. Even a fossil beetle was named in his honor. His life shows how math can unlock the secrets of the stars.
