Charles Messier was a famous French astronomer.

He lived from 1730 to 1817. Messier is best known for his special list of objects in the sky. This list is called a catalogue. It helped people tell the difference between comets and other fuzzy shapes. Today, astronomers still use his list to find interesting things in space. His work remains a very important part of how we study the stars.

Messier spent much of his time hunting for comets. While looking, he often saw fixed, fuzzy objects in the night sky. He did not want to waste time on things that were not comets. To help himself, he made a list of these objects. He worked with his friend Pierre Méchain to build this list. They wanted to avoid mistakes during their observations. This way, they could focus on finding real comets.

Messier's interest in the sky began when he was a young boy. In 1744, he saw a great six-tailed comet. He also saw a solar eclipse in 1748 near his home. In 1751, he began working for the astronomer of the French Navy. He used a small four-inch telescope for his work. He kept very careful records of everything he saw. King Louis XV even gave him the nickname "Ferret of Comets."

His catalogue grew larger over many years. The first version had 45 objects and came out in 1774. By 1780, the list had 80 objects. The final version in 1781 had 103 objects. Later, researchers found seven more objects that Messier or Méchain had seen. This brought the total to 110 Messier objects. These include 39 galaxies and 26 open star clusters. They also include 29 globular star clusters and 4 planetary nebulae.

We still use Messier's names for these objects today. We use the letter M and a number to name them. For example, the Orion Nebula is called M 42. These objects are very popular for amateur astronomers to find. They are often bright and easy to see. Messier's legacy is also found in the names of space objects. There is a lunar crater and an asteroid named after him.
