language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Fried chicken is a dish that many people love for its textures. It features a crispy, crunchy outer crust made from seasoned flour or batter. This coating helps keep the juices inside the meat so it stays tender. Most people use broiler chickens to make this meal. You might find it described as salty, spicy, or even greasy. It is often served with sides like mashed potatoes, gravy, or macaroni and cheese.

There are a few different ways to cook the chicken. In pan frying, the pieces sit in a shallow layer of fat. In deep frying, the chicken is completely covered by hot oil. Some people even use a pressure cooker to speed things up. This method uses steam to cook the meat quickly while keeping the skin crisp. Before cooking, many cooks soak the meat in buttermilk to make it tender. They might also add spices like garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika to the flour.

The history of this food connects many different parts of the world. The Scottish were recorded deep-frying chicken with breadcrumbs and seasonings in the 1700s. At the same time, many West African peoples had traditions of seasoning fried chicken and cooking it in palm oil. In the American South, these traditions came together. Enslaved Africans brought deep knowledge of how to prepare chickens. Because they were often allowed to keep chickens, they continued to fry them for special occasions.

Fried chicken has many famous names and specific versions. In Nashville, Tennessee, you can find "hot chicken" which uses cayenne pepper paste. There is also "Barberton chicken" made by Serbian immigrants in Ohio. In the 20th century, large fast food chains like KFC and Popeyes helped the dish spread globally. Some people eat chicken wings most often because they have more fat than other parts. An average whole fried chicken has about 12% fat. Each serving usually contains around 240 calories of energy.

Today, this meal is a part of many different celebrations. It is a common choice for a traditional "Sunday dinner" in the South. Some Southern Jewish families serve fried chicken during Shabbat dinners alongside braided challah bread. You might also see it at big gatherings like Independence Day. Even though it is now a common food, it was once a rare treat for special moments. Whether it is served as "chicken and waffles" or simple chicken fingers, it remains a very popular way to eat together.
