During World War II, Germany took control of France. This was a very hard time for the French people. Life changed in many ways. German flags hung over the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Books were banned, and art was stolen. Many people faced food shortages and malnutrition. This was especially hard for children and the elderly. To make things even harder, hundreds of thousands of workers were sent to Germany for labor.

Many people decided they could not stay quiet. They formed the French Resistance to fight back. These people came from all parts of society. They included students, teachers, and religious leaders. They also included people of many different faiths, like Jews and Muslims. Some worked in small, secret groups called cells. In the countryside, these groups were known as the Maquis.

The Resistance used many different ways to fight. Some people did small things, like cutting phone lines or slashing tires. Others made secret newspapers to share news with the public. Groups like Combat were founded by leaders like Henri Frenay. Some railroad workers helped soldiers escape to safety. They also helped move secret papers across the country. The British even helped by sending supplies from planes.

Being in the Resistance was very dangerous. The German authorities used harsh punishments to stop them. They sometimes took hostages or carried out massacres. One example was the destruction of the village of Oradour-sur-Glane. The Resistance also had to face a group called the Milice. This was a French group that worked with the Nazis. They were often very brutal to those they suspected of resisting.

In 1944, the Resistance helped the Allied armies win. They gave secret information about German defenses. This helped the Allies during the invasion of Normandy in June. The fighters joined together to form the French Forces of the Interior, or FFI. In June 1944, the FFI had 100,000 fighters. By October 1944, it grew to 400,000 members. By May 1945, France had built a huge army of 1.2 million men.
