This government was officially called the French State. It was led by a man named Marshal Philippe Pétain.

The government was based in a city called Vichy. This city was located in the southern part of France. This area was not controlled by German troops at first. This southern part was often called the "free zone."

This government worked in a very specific way. After Germany won a big battle in France, a peace deal called an armistice was signed.

This deal meant Germany occupied the northern and western parts of the country. The Vichy government chose to follow a policy called collaboration. This meant they worked together with the German leaders. Pétain hoped this would help France get better treatment.

He wanted to avoid even harsher rules from Germany. However, the Germans still kept many French soldiers as prisoners. They also forced many young French men to do hard labor.

Life under this regime was very hard for many people. The government had a lot of control over everything. They started a program called the "Révolution nationale." This was a way to change how French people lived and thought.

The government also used the media to spread ideas. They promoted racism and antisemitism against Jewish people.

This led to very sad events. French police were ordered to round up Jewish people. At least 72,500 Jews were deported and killed in camps.

Many important things happened between 1940 and 1944. In October 1940, Pétain met with Adolf Hitler in a place called Montoire-sur-le-Loir.

In November 1942, the situation changed for the Vichy government. The Allies landed in North Africa. Because of this, German and Italian troops moved into the whole country.

This ended the idea that the Vichy government was truly independent. The Germans now controlled all of mainland France.

People did not just accept these rules. Many French people joined a group called the Resistance.

By 1944, the liberation of France began. The new government, called the GPRF, took over the country.

Later, Pétain was put on trial for treason. He was sentenced to death, but it was changed to life in prison.
